On June 14, 2025, the fifth meeting of the Lion’s Share of the 20th Century Book Club will take place at the literary café Stiva at the L. N. T. Cultural and Exhibition Center. The hostess and moderator will be Tatiana Bogatyryova, a literary historian and assistant professor of the Journalism Chair of Tula State University.
The program of the book club is based on the juxtaposition of works by two authors—Leo Tolstoy and a foreign author, an iconic figure of the 20th century. Under the guidance of Tatiana Bogatyryova, the participants will try to “push” two texts together and find what is similar and different about them. Analyzing the style of a literary work, the participants in the club will be able to share their own impressions of what they have read.
“All the foreign authors we will be talking about were familiar with Tolstoy’s works. And each of them was searching for new artistic forms that would be able to express the contents of the very complex 20th century. At the same time, if we have a close look at Tolstoy’s own works, we can make an unexpected discovery that he also used techniques and forms characteristic of foreign literature of the 20th century. This connection will be the starting point in our discussions,” says Tatiana Bogatyryova.
At the fifth meeting of the club, Sevastopol in May by Leo Tolstoy will be discussed together with The Third Resignation by Gabriel García Márquez — a Colombian writer, a Nobel Prize winner in Literature.
