On March 7, 2026, the cultural and exhibition complex “L. N. T.” will host the event “March in the Diaries of Sophia Tolstaya.” On the eve of March 8, the Yasnaya Polyana Museum-Estate invites guests to immerse themselves in the world of the spring diary entries of Countess Tolstaya, whose diaries can be called a true novel about an extraordinary woman.
During the meeting, participants will discuss the thoughts that occupied Countess Tolstaya as nature awakened in spring, and what the month of March was like during the early years of her marriage and later in life. The feelings, experiences, and concerns of early spring spilled onto the pages of her diary—an engaging narrative whose main heroine was the wife of Leo Tolstoy.
In the course of a lively discussion, participants will examine Sophia’s diary entries for March from different years and compare them with the entries of Leo Tolstoy in order to see the differences in how the spouses perceived the world.
The program will conclude with a creative workshop on embroidering a floral composition in satin stitch on a handkerchief. Sewing and embroidery were among the everyday activities of the countess. Her diaries often mention how she sewed carpets, quilts, and clothes for her husband and children. For Sophia Tolstaya, needlework was at once a mechanical habitual task, a consolation in times of hardship, and a way to express her own aesthetic views.
