Until November 9, 2025, the exhibition “Woman: Faces of the 19th Century” will be open at the Oldenburg Palace Complex in Ramon, Voronezh Region. This inter-museum project explores the role of women in Russian society during the 19th century. The exhibition includes items from the collections of the Leo Tolstoy Museum-Estate Yasnaya Polyana.
Yasnaya Polyana presents women’s clothing and footwear, a baby carriage from the late 19th – early 20th century, theatrical costumes from the 1937 Moscow Art Theatre production of Anna Karenina, and items illustrating the hobbies of Sophia Andreevna Tolstaya.
The project is dedicated to the 180th anniversary of the birth of Princess Eugenia Maximilianovna of Oldenburg, owner of the Ramon estate.
The exhibition reveals the many facets of the female world – family, creativity, profession, and inner life. Through the lives of Eugenia of Oldenburg, Sophia Tolstaya, Sophia Kovalevskaya, and other contemporaries, the project shows how professional choices were shaped by the opportunities and limitations of social life in 19th-century Russia.
The exhibition features authentic 19th-century items: painted portraits, letters, diaries, household objects, as well as period costumes and jewelry. These come from the collections of nine museums, including the Voronezh Regional Art Museum named after I. N. Kramskoy, the Voronezh Regional Museum of Local Lore, the Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, and others in the Voronezh and Lipetsk regions.
