From September 1 to 3, 2025, Yasnaya Polyana will host the 20th International Seminar of Translators of works by Leo Tolstoy and other Russian classics. More than twenty translators and researchers from Russia, India, Iraq, Iran, Macedonia, Syria, and Turkey will take part.
At the seminar’s opening on September 1, speeches will be given by Ekaterina Tolstaya, director of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum; Galina Alexeeva, the museum’s academic supervisor; and Girish Munjal, head of the Russian Language Section at the Department of Slavic and Finno-Ugric Studies, University of Delhi.
Seminar participants will discuss the difficulties and peculiarities of translating works by Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Bunin, Vikenty Veresaev, Mikhail Sholokhov, and Vasily Shukshin into Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, German, Persian, Tatar, and French, as well as the translations of works by Mario Vargas Llosa—Peruvian author, Nobel Prize in Literature laureate (2010), and Yasnaya Polyana Prize laureate (2017)—into Russian. In addition, participants will touch upon controversial and fascinating issues of translation theory and practice.
At the final session, there will be a presentation of the collection of materials from the previous seminar, as well as new editions of translations of works by Leo Tolstoy and other Russian writers.
