It was here - at his ancestral country estate with a poetical name of Yasnaya Polyana (Clear Glade) – that Leo Tolstoy was born, lived and worked.
Yasnaya Polyana was declared a museum in 1921. The museum is included in the list of most valuable cultural heritage sites of the Russian Federation, and is, no doubt, one of the most unique memorial museums in the world.
Today, Yasnaya Polyana is a large museum complex; besides the Tolstoy estate, it includes a number of branches. So, the present-day “geography” of the museum matches its rich history and the diversity of its activities.
