Patchwork is one of the most popular folk crafts. Every peasant house had quilts made from old clothing, patchwork rugs, curtains, and toys. Patchwork elements were used to decorate the traditional costume. Making their patchwork items, Russian peasant women did not use rulers or special patterns, as are used now. They sewed by cutting or tearing the rags by eye and stitching them together, intuitively estimating the proportions and defining the combination of colours.

At present patchwork is becoming more and more popular all over the world. Unfortunately, western methods of patchwork are mostly popularized in Russia now. At Yasnaya Polyana, a lot of work is being done to study and revive traditional Russian ways of making patchwork items – based on geometrical pattern.
