The photography collection of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum contains over 4,000 items and includes daguerreotypes, positives, negatives, and slides dated between the 2nd half of the 19th century and present.

The non-memorial photography collection includes items acquired by the museum from 1920 till present. Those are photographs of Leo Tolstoy and his family, their relatives and friends, and also photographs related to the history and activities of the Yasnaya Polyana museum and showing its guests, exhibitions, various events and conferences etc. These photos have been coming from different sources. In the 1950-1970s valuable photographs from the archives of Leo Tolstoy’s grand-daughter Sophia Tolstaya-Yesenina and of Vladimir Chertkov Jr. (son of Tolstoy’s friend Vladimir Chertkov) were included in the museum’s collection. Lately, many interesting photographs have also been added, including photographs from the archives of the writer’s grandson Alexander Ilyich Tolstoy (donated by his widow Svetlana Tolstaya) and from the archives of I. Platonova (daughter of a well-known Tolstoyan and Chertkov’s friend). Some of them are copies of photographs kept in the Tolstoy House.
