We publish this collection of photographs to mark the 150th anniversary of their author’s birth. Sergey Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky, an outstanding Russian photographer, chemist, inventor, publisher, teacher and public figure, a member of the Imperial Russian Technical Society and the Russian Photography Society, was born on August 30, 1863.

On August 2, 1901 Prokudin-Gorsky’s “photozincographic and phototechnical workshop” was opened. In 1906-1909 it accommodated the laboratory and editorial office of the “Amateur Photographer” magazine, in which Prokudin-Gorsky published a series of technical articles on the principles of color reproduction.

On December 13, 1902 Prokudin-Gorsky announced the creation of coloured transparencies using the method of three-color photography of A. Mite, and in 1905 he patented his light-sensitizing agent that surpassed its counterparts developed by foreign chemists.

The photographs taken by Prokudin-Gorsky at Yasnaya Polyana belong to his most valuable pictures. They were taken in Tolstoy’s lifetime, in May of 1908, not long before the writer’s 80th birthday.
