The highest priority in the home schooling in the Tolstoy family was introducing the children to systematic reading, and there was a good reason for it: in the 19th century books provided opportunity for the socialization of children and the basis for their moral and spiritual development. The experience of creating a collection of books for children and grandchildren can be clearly seen in Leo Tolstoy’s personal library.

The book was given to Leo Tolstoy’s ten-year-old daughter Sasha by her teacher N. Welsh on December 31, 1894, with the inscription: “To my dear little pupil Sasha Tolstoy with love.”

Books of this series contained stories for children, which were published in magazines and year-books in different countries and belonged to authors of different epochs. The stories contained in this book are divided into the following categories: Tales of home and school, Tales of domestic life, Tales of heroism, Tales of adventure, Historical and other tales, Fairy tales.

There was also an analogous series for boys.
