Yasnaya Polyana Art Gallery

IMG_0217

The “Yasnaya Polyana” Gallery is located in the historic center of the Zarechie district of Tula (Zarechie meaning a part of town across the river), at the intersection of the streets Oktyabrskaya and Lunacharskogo (formerly, Millionnaya and Georgievskaya streets), in an 18th-century building that has preserved the classical appearance characteristic of Russian town houses.

At present, it is a modern well-equipped exhibition space of 100 square meters.

The “Yasnaya Polyana” Gallery opened in 1997 as a center of interaction between artists in order to support and encourage their creative activities in painting, graphic art, sculpture, photography, installation, applied art, fashion, video, or new technologies – i.e. any kind of activity which, if we quote Tolstoy, may be referenced in answer to the question “what is art?”

In different years the gallery presented to the public of Tula the heritage of such masters as Oleg Tolstoy, Mikhail Larionov, Alexander Rodchenko, Vadim Sidur, Tatiana Mavrina, Nikolai Kuzmin, Efim Chestnyakov, and works by modern artists from Tula, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and smaller towns in the Russian provinces, as well as from France, Spain, and the USA.

Another priority of the gallery is showing literary and memorial exhibitions related to Leo Tolstoy’s life and works. In recent years, there were a number of cooperation projects, such as “Tolstoy. Turgenev. Fet,” “Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi,” “Tolstoy and Dostoevsky,” and “Don. Sholokhov. Russia,” which let us widen the dialogical scope of the gallery and communicate with leading Russian museums and international cultural centers.

In addition, meetings with writers, literary critics, artists and scholars, musical and poetical evenings, presentations of new publications, lectures, seminars for museum professionals, open lessons and interactive classes for school children, and workshops for both children and adults are regularly held at the gallery.
