Exhibition of Arch-ideas in a Provincial Town

On November 29, 2014 the concluding conference of the project “ARCH-ideas for a Provincial Town,” which was among the winners of the contest “Cultural Mosaic of Small Towns and Villages” of the Charitable Foundation of Elena and Gennady Timchenko, took place in the village of Krapivna, Tula Region.

The goal of the project was to visualize ideas related to the development of the historic town of Krapivna that has preserved the historic look of a typical provincial town from the time of Empress Catherine II, a town whose history is interesting in its own right and is also closely related to Leo Tolstoy’s life and activities in the local Zemstvo (district council).

The project team, which included architects, urban specialists, museum professionals, designers and artists, studied the historic landscape of the site and analyzed its architectural characteristics, and enjoyed the town’s panoramic views while trying to understand the secret of its charm.

The conference was carried out in a round-table format – a discussion of the future prospects of Krapivna, ways and means of preserving its beauty and charm, and new projects and opportunities. After the meeting in the English Club, an exhibition of “arch-ideas,” entitled “Krapivna: the Environment,” opened at the Krapivna Local History Museum. At the same time, the best works of artists and photographers who took part in autumn open-air sessions in Krapivna were displayed.
