Vladimir Tolstoy

IMG_0461Vladimir Tolstoy has been the director of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum since 1994. He was born on September 28, 1962, in Moscow. In 1984 he graduated from the International Department of the Journalism Faculty of the Moscow State University. In 1980 – 1992 he was a reporter and then the editor of one of the sections of the magazine Students’ Meridian. In 1980 he became a member of the Journalists Union of the Soviet Union. In 1993–94 Vladimir Tolstoy held the position of a chief expert of the Museum Department of the RF Ministry of Culture.

On August 1, 1994 Vladimir Tolstoy was appointed director of the Leo Tolstoy Museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana. From 1995 he has been a member of ICOM (International Council of Museums), and in 2009 he was elected president of ICOM Russia. In 1997 he founded and became chairman of the Association of Museum Professionals of the Russian Regions (AMR). At present this association unites over 500 provincial museums in 30 regions of Russia. From 2002 Vladimir Tolstoy has been a board member of the Russian Museums Union. In 2003 he was awarded the title of Honored Cultural Worker.
Vladimir Tolstoy established the International Writers’ Meetings held at Yasnaya Polyana since 1996; he is the editor of the annual publication of the Meetings. On his initiative the annual edition of collected articles Yasnaya Polyana was renewed; it includes research articles about Leo Tolstoy, his works and his milieu. Vladimir Tolstoy is also the chief editor of the Resurrection historical anthology, of the World and Museum magazine of the Association of Museum Professionals (since 1999), and of the Yasnaya Polyana literary magazine (in cooperation with the writer Anatoly Kim). He is chairman of the jury of the Yasnaya Polyana literary award (from 2003), and one of the judges of the Big Book literary award.
Due to Vladimir Tolstoy’s efforts, the estates of Nikolskoye-Vyazemskoye, Pirogovo, Pokrovskoye and Mansurovo, the Local History Museum of Krapivna, and the Cultural Center in Tula were included in the structure of the Yasnaya Polyana museum as its branches. He also initiated the project of the reconstruction and museolization of the Kozlova Zaseka railway station, carried out by the museum in cooperation with the Moscow Railway.
Vladimir Tolstoy is the organizer of the biennial Tolstoy Family Reunions. During these reunions Yasnaya Polyana welcomes around 200 descendants of Leo Tolstoy, now living in many countries of Europe and America, who are willing to contribute to the development of Yasnaya Polyana.
