“Transport Factory” Exhibition

2November 13 - December 7, 2015
Krapivna Local History Museum

The exhibition will open on November 12 at 15:00.

The exhibition tells about the history of the Krapivna Transport Factory, one of the oldest enterprises in Russia that produced carts, sledges, and barrels.

The exhibition will show photographs from the Krapivna museum’s collection and from personal archives, unique documents from the factory’s archives, and samples of its produce. By the way, few people would know that props for Sergey Bondarchuk’s film “War and Peace,” one of the most expensive movies in the history of cinematography, were made at the Krapivna Transport Factory.

Background information:

4

In the early 1920s, there were not many enterprises in Russia which manufactured transport-related products. One such enterprise was located in Krapivna. In 1927, cart- and barrel-makers of Krapivna united and organized a cooperative called “Obozstroi” (i.e. Transportbuilding), and in 1949 it became a factory. The goods it produced were taken to the nearest railway station of Shchekino, and from there delivered to Oryol, Lipetsk, Rostov, Yaroslavl, and many other major cities of Russia.

In post-war years the Krapivna Transport factory was one of the largest factories of this kind in Russia. In addition to its main activities, in the late 1960s an art ceramics shop was opened at the factory, which began producing Filimonovo toys (a craft famous all over Russia). The craftsmen continued to work as before, at their own homes, but their items were taken to the factory for firing, and from there were further distributed. Production there continued until the Filimonovo craftsmen joined the Arts Fund of the USSR.

The factory was closed in the early 2000s. At present, the possibility of opening a historical reconstruction shop is being negotiated with the enterprise located on the factory‘s premises.

The exhibition can be visited every day from 9:00 to 17:00. The cost of a visit with a guided tour is 30 rubles for a discounted ticket and 50 rubles for a full-price ticket.
