Exhibition “AlphaVIT”

003August 4 - September 3, 2015
Yasnaya Polyana Gallery

The exhibition will open on August 3 at 17:00. It will show flower compositions done by employees of our museum’s sector of study and revival of country estate traditions.

Have we ever tried to understand why the letters of the alphabet are written the way they are written? Why are their outlines so extravagant sometimes? Looking at them closely, don’t we see that they remind us of flowers? Of thin stalks and buds, or half-open blossoms? The museum’s chief designer Alexander Kartashov and florists Marina Korabelnikova and Tatiana Frolova give us the opportunity to see the alphabet from this very point of view, and to immerse ourselves in the life of letters, which is a little bit like that of flowers and herbs.

In their work, our florists rely on traditions that have existed at Yasnaya Polyana for a long time. Leo Tolstoy’s mother gathered plants for herbaria and studied the flora of Yasnaya Polyana; she even wrote a hand-written book about the plants and flowers growing at the estate. Leo Tolstoy’s wife Sophia followed that tradition; three herbaria she made are still kept in the collection of the Tolstoy House. The herbaria also contain her numerous notes, from which we learn that not only the family members, but also friends and guests of Yasnaya Polyana gathered flowers. These herbaria have preserved up to now the freshness of colors and natural beauty of the flowers.
