Exhibition “Holy Linen”

Macrame_3July4 – August 22, 2013
Yasnaya Polyana Estate, Volkonsky House

Opening: on July 4 at 10:00

You are welcome to visit an exhibition of truly unique works. Their author, Vladimir Denshchikov, is the only artist creating icons from linen thread. He uses the technique of “macramé-collage knotting” and also adds some kinds of hand-made fabric. His work is very demanding, as each knot on his icons is tied by hand. Each icon the size of 40x50 cm can have up to one and a half million such knots, and it can take half a year.

Among professionals Vladimir Denshchikov is considered the founder of a new form of icon making. The only kind of thread he uses in his work is linen; for him this material is associated with Orthodoxy, being as simple, pure, comprehensible, and strong as Orthodoxy itself. The faces of the saints are painted in oil on canvas.

During seven years of work using his unique technique of “macramé-collage knotting” the artist has created over 70 icons, and each of them is used as a religious object. His icons are kept both in private collections and in churches, such as the icon of St. Nikolas the Miracle Worker in the lighthouse-church honoring sailors and those lost at sea, in the village of Malorechenskoe in the Crimea. In July 2010 an icon entitled “The Virgin Mary of Tenderness” created by Denshchikov was given to His Holiness Kirill Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.  In May 2011 the icon “Saint Equal to the Apostles Prince Vladimir” was given to His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Vladimir.

Vladimir Denshchikov was born on July 1, 1952 in Kiev. In 1974 he graduated from the Kiev Theater Institute. From 1975 to 2007 he worked as an artist, director, and set designer in the Crimean Academic Russian Drama Theater named for M. Gorky. In 2007 after he had a stroke he became a teacher in the Crimean University of Culture, Arts, and Tourism.  He is a People’s Artist of Ukraine, and an honored artist of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. His name is listed in the Book of Ukrainian Records.

The works of the artist have been shown at exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Ukraine. They are in private collections in Ukraine, Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, and the U.S.
