“The Garrison Town” Exhibition

Krapivna Local History Museum

On June 30, 2015, “The Garrison Town” exhibition was opened at the Krapivna Local History Museum. The exhibition tells about the Krapivna of the mid 16th – early 18th centuries, when it was a fortress town and a part of the abatis line of fortifications.

The objects and documents on display tell about the construction and reconstruction of the fortress, about the life in it and the people who defended it, and about that time, so different from later epochs in its lifestyle and view of the world. Objects are taken from the collections of the Krapivna Museum and the “Kulikovo Field” State Military History and Natural Museum-Preserve, and copies of documents – from the Russian State Archives of Ancient Acts.

Exhibition “Yasnaya Polyana: War and Peace”

May 7, 2015 at 15:00 in the Yasnaya Polyana Gallery there will be the opening of the exhibition “Yasnaya Polyana: War and Peace.” The exhibition will include photographs of Yasnaya Polyana during World War II and contemporary photos of the estate. Visitors can see the Soviet and German war equipment, pieces of uniforms, and personal articles that belonged to soldiers. The exhibition will include an edition of Leo Tolstoy’s book War and Peace published in 1941. At the exhibition opening there will also be a presentation of Nikolay Steshchenko-Frolov’s book, “Lament about the Creation of the World.”

Exhibition of Children’s Drawings “For Our Great-grandfathers”

On May 3 at 15:00, the exhibition “For Our Great-grandfathers” will open at the Exhibition Hall of the Volkonsky House and the results of the contest “Tolstoy Through Children’s Eyes” will be summed up.

Young artists (from 5 to 17 years old) created graphic and painted works dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Three Exhibitions as Part of the Project “Bringing a Draft to Light”

The Yasnaya Polyana Museum opens three final exhibitions of the “Bringing a Draft to Light” project analyzing Leo Tolstoy’s manuscripts as documents that have an unusual emotional force and show the writer’s “creative laboratory,” and at the same time are beautiful objects to look at.

The project “Bringing a Draft to Light” (headed by Fyokla Tolstaya; coordinator – Youlia Vronskaya) is a winner of the “Changing Museum in the Changing World” contest of the V. Potanin Foundation. The project researches ways of exhibiting manuscripts and their perception by museum visitors.

Exhibition “Mysteries of the Saburovs’ House”

Opening of the exhibition will take place on March 31 at 15:00.

On display at the “Mysteries of the Saburovs’ House” exhibition will be documents and photographs telling about the history of two merchant families – the Saburovs and the Yudins, whose fates were closely and startlingly entwined. It is interesting to note that representatives of those families used to live in the house that now belongs to the museum.

Exhibition “Anna Karenina”

On March 27, 2015 the “Anna Karenina” exhibition, dedicated to one of the most famous works of Russian and world literature, will open at the Yasnaya Polyana Gallery (Tula, Oktyabrskaya St., 12).

This exhibition is a part of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum’s major project commemorating the 140th anniversary of the beginning of the publication of the novel in the Russky Vestnik magazine, implemented as part of the Year of Literature in Russia. The exhibition will show objects from the collections of the Tolstoy museums at Yasnaya Polyana and in Moscow, and of the A.A. Bakhrushin Theater Museum.

Exhibition “Illustrators of Anna Karenina”

On March 19, 2015, at 14:30 the “Illustrators of Anna Karenina” exhibition will open at the Local History Museum of Krapivna. It is the second event of the large project dedicated to this novel. The project is carried out by the Yasnaya Polyana Estate-Museum as part of the Year of Literature in Russia and commemorates the 140th anniversary of the beginning of the publication of the novel in the Russky Vestnik magazine.

The exhibition will show illustrations of the novel Anna Karenina by Russian artists from the collection of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum. They include works by N.A. Tyrsa (1939), K.I. Rudakov (1940), O.G. Vereisky (the 1970s), A. Hojdre (1978), and V.D. Medvedev (1984), and also paintings by A.V. Vanetsian (1950-52).

Exhibition “Light Ineffable…”

On February 27 at 14:00 the “Ineffable Light…” exhibition, dedicated to the Orthodox history of the Tambov Region and to the 100th anniversary of the canonization of St. Pitirim, the Bishop of Tambov,   will open at the Yasnaya Polyana Gallery.

On display there are more than 200 objects from the collections of the Tambov Regional History Museum, the Morshansk History and Art Museum, the Tambov Society of Lovers of Local History, and from the private collections of M. Semenov and M. Nikolsky. Several sections of the exhibition will acquaint the visitors with works of Christian art and worship books.

Exhibition “The Polenovs’ Russia. Fairy Tales and Images”

February 20, 2015 at 14:00 in the Krapivna Regional Museum the exhibit “The Polenovs’ Russia. Fairy Tales and Images” will open. It combines paintings by two representatives of the famous creative dynasty - Maria and Elena Polenova, the mother and sister of the author of the painting “A Moscow Courtyard,” Vasily Polenov.

The exhibition will be open every day from 9:00 to 17:00.  The cost of admission with a tour will be 30 rubles for discounted categories of tickets and 50 rubles for regular tickets.

Exhibition “Creative Atmosphere”

Photo Exhibition “Nature of Places Associated with Tolstoy”

January 23, 2015 at 14:00 in the Krapivna Regional Museum (Shchekinskiy District, Krapivna Village, Sovetskaya St., 49), a photo exhibition of works by our colleague Alexander Plyakin will open. The exhibition will feature about 50 works that depict the charming nature of places associated with Tolstoy.

The visitors will see the familiar landscapes of the estates of Yasnaya Polyana, Nikolskoye-Vyazemskoye, and Pirogovo, and the old town of Krapivna, taken at various times of year. Many of these works have been published in various publications, which will also be displayed at the exhibition.

Exhibition “The Treasure Chest. Stories”

On January 20, 2015 an exhibition will open in Krapivna, devoted to a single item that, however, cannot be called ordinary. The treasure chest became a character in numerous literary works (or was mentioned in them), and artists from all over the world depicted it in their canvasses.
