Exhibition: Tolstoy. Dagestan. Hadji Murad

On November 4, 2017 at 17:00, the Tolstoy. Dagestan. Hadji Murad exhibition will open at the Yasnaya Polyana Gallery. It will tell visitors about the outstanding Dagestani military leader, legendary hero of the Caucasian war, and character in one of Leo Tolstoy‘s last works.

This complex and controversial figure attracted the attention of both his contemporaries and representatives of later periods, and has been the subject of disputes among both professional historians and among people simply interested in history. There are scholarly articles about him, and he has inspired artists and writers. The most significant treatment of his personality is probably Leo Tolstoy’s novella Hadji Murad.

The exhibition will show objects from the P.S. Gamzatova Dagestan Fine Arts Museum, the A. Takho-Godi National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan, and the R. Gamzatov National Library of the Republic of Dagestan. Many of them  - primarily works of 19th-century Russian art – are being shown outside of Dagestan for the first time within the last 70 years. In addition to fine art objects, the exhibition will include objects of applied art of Dagestan from the middle of the 19th century and later objects analogous to those from that period.

The exhibition will be open until December 17; it can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 1:00 to 19:00. Cost of admission: free of charge for visitors under 16; 15 rubles for a discounted ticket; and 30 rubles for a full-price ticket. Cost of a guided visit: 30 rubles for visitors under 16 and for a discounted ticket; and 45 rubles for a full-price ticket.
