Yasnaya Polyana Cultural Center

The third season of our Unsystematic Literature Course for Everybody will open with a meeting with the poet, essayist, and journalist Maria Stepanova.

Maria Stepanova will try to tell the audience about the complicated relationship among history, memory, and literature. What happens to literature after a catastrophe? The tragic experience of the 20th century changed both the texts themselves and the readers‘ expectations. Memory and history: are they allies or enemies? What is post-memory and why is it a disease of the century? How does literature choose between the necessity to remember and the ability to forget? The guests of this event at the Yasnaya Polyana Cultural Center will get answers to these questions.

Background information:

Maria Stepanova is a poet, the edior-in-chief of the online publication on culture and society, and the winner of Russian and Western book awards, such as the Hubert Burda Foundation award to the best young poet in Eastern Europe (Germany, 2006), and the Andrey Bely Award (2005). Her poems have been translated into English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew, Finnish, and other languages.

Maria Stepanova‘s lecture on the images of the past and the future in post-Soviet Russia is included in Dmitry Butrin‘s  course The New Man on the web site of the Open University educational project.
