Yasnaya Polyana Gallery 

The Yasnaya Polyana Museum will again participate in the international Museum Night event. We welcome you to the building of the Yasnaya Polyana Gallery in Tula, and to the cozy courtyard it shares with the Yasnaya Polyana Publishing House. Both museum buildings were built in the late 18th century and witnessed many an interesting story, which our colleagues will be happy to tell you during Museum Night.

The Museum Night program includes:

  • A guided tour of the Old ABC Book exhibition by the Moscow artist Marina Khankova. On display are sketches and watercolour illustrations to Leo Tolstoy‘s Russian ABC Book. These works take us back into the atmosphere of childhood, immerse us in the radiant world of fairy tales, and remind us of the tradition of family readings. Venue: Yasnaya Polyana Gallery. Start of the tour: 18:00 and 19:15.
  • An interactive workshop for children, Visiting the Yasnaya Polyana Entrance Towers. The workshop is intended for elementary school children who will be able to get acquainted with Leo Tolstoy‘s estate while playing. Venue: the courtyard or the Yasnaya Polyana Gallery (depending on the weather). The workshop starts at 18:45 and 20:00.
  • The guided tour A Trip Through Tula on the Other Side of the River. The History of Town Mansions of the 18th Century and Their Owners. The audience will learn about the history of the house of Ivan Kobylin (now the Gallery) and the house of the merchant Timofei Plakhov (the building of the Publishing House). Together with the guides, they will examine not only the outside of the building, but also see the ground floor and cellar of Plakhov’s house, where vaulted ceilings and an old cast-iron staircase have been preserved. The tour starts at 20:00.
  • The Living Guidebook. The employees of the museum‘s bookstore will describe for the audience the local history books on sale and answer audience questions. Venue: Yasnaya Polyana Bookstore. Time: 18:00 and 22:00.
  • A Keepsake: an exhibition and sale of designer jewelry and interior items done in various techniques. Venue: All Arts souvenir shop. Time: 18:00 – 22:00.

All Museum Night events will finish at 22:00.

Background information:

Museum Night is an annual event dedicated to International Museum Day that is celebrated on May 18. On this night, many museums around the world offer their visitors the chance to see their exhibitons in the evening and at night. The main goal of the event is to show the possibilities and the potential of modern museums and to attract young people to museums. The Yasnaya Polyana museum has participated in Museum Night since 2014.
