Exhibition: The Teacher and the Student. Continuity of Generations

_03On Janury 11. 2019 at 15:00 The Teacher and the Student. Continuity of Generations exhibition, dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the A.S. Dargomyzhsky Tula College of Arts, will open at the Yasnaya Polyana Gallery (Tula, Oktyabrskaya St., 12).

The exhibition features works by teachers, students and graduates of the College‘s departments of painting and sculpture done in various genres and on various topics.

The exhibition is not only a kind of account of the creative work of the teachers and students’ common community; it also shows a continuous dialogue between the teacher and the student, between the mature master and the young artist who is still trying to discover his individual manner, who is looking for his subject and ways of expressing it.

The works shown at the exhibition will be of interest to a wide circle of both amateurs and specialists, as they provide a rare opportunity to look into creative laboratories and learn about the process of the mysterious birth of true artistic mastery.

The art department of the College of Arts has existed since 1990. All its teachers, except the youngest ones who are recent graduates, are members of the Russian Artists‘ Union. Three generations of artists work at the college, and a creative continuity from teachers to students is its long-standing tradition.

Like any academic school, the department is trying to preserve the Russian traditional realistic school. Realism, however, is understood very widely – as the ability to look at modern life with its problems in an original way, to evaluate one’s own place as an artist and a human being in the world, and to find one’s own unique subject and its artistic expression.

The sculpture department was established in 2010; it is the only department of this kind in Tula Region. During its short existence, it has proven itself to be creatively active, successful and rapidly developing. Works of its students are displayed at all city and regional art exhibitions, those of both young artists and professionals, and attract visitors with new ideas and original themes.

Background information:

The A.S. Dargomyzhsky Tula College of Art is one of Tula‘s oldest academic institutions. It was established in 1908 by Kondraty Sorokin, a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, as a music school. At that time, the college not only aimed to prepare professional musicians, but also to promote musical art in the provinces. Many graduates of the college became well-known musicians, scholars, and teachers. Most of the teachers at music schools, colleges and groups in Tula and Tula Region also graduated from the college.

The exhibition will be open until February 17, 2019. It can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00. Cost of an admission ticket: free of charge for those entitled to discounts, and 50 rubles for a full-price ticket. Cost of a ticket for a guided tour: 50 rubles for a discounted ticket, and 100 rubles for a full-price ticket.
