Long List of the Yasnaya Polyana Book Award Announced

Samsung_Yasnaya_Polyana_1

Moscow, June 19, 2018. – The co-founders of the Yasnaya Polyana Book Award, the Yasnaya Polyana Museum and Samsung Electronics, announced the long list of books in the Modern Russian Fiction category for 2018. The long list includes 43 works by the best Russian authors, among them Dmitry Glukhovsky, Olga Slavnikova, Maria Stepanova, and Liudmila Petrushevskaya.

The Yasnaya Polyana Book Award unites key experts in literature and is a guide to modern literature providing the readers lists of the best Russian and translated books. Modern Russian Fiction is the Award’s main category. It recognizes an outstanding work by a modern author which promotes the ideals of humanity and which is important to read at this time as it reveals the course of present-day literary trends. The works are nominated by publishers, thick literary magazines, winners of previous years, and writers’ unions.

The prize fund of the Yasnaya Polyana Award in 2018 is 6.2 million rubles, which makes it the largest book award in Russia. The winner of the Modern Russian Fiction Award will receive 3 million rubles, and the short-listed authors will divide 1 million rubles.

„This year, the list proved to be rich and diverse both in terms of history and geography, to say nothing about literature. But the main intrigue of any award is not the long list, but the short one. And, surely, the winner. So, analyzing the long list of the Yasnaya Polyana Award in 2018, I wouldn‘t even try to guess who will be included in the short one. It‘s clear that there are well-known and little-known writers, there are winners of other book awards, and those who have never received awards. Whether this last factor should raise the chances of those authors or we evaluate just the texts – this is something for the jury to discuss.in any case, the long list represents the full picture of literary life, and the jury will have a lot to read this summer,“ commented Aleksei Varlamov, a writer, researcher of Russian literaure, and a jury member of the Yasnaya Polyana Book Award.

„For over 15 years, the Yasnaya Polyana Book Award co-established by the Leo Tolstoy Estate-Museum and Samsung Electronics has been contributing to the development of modern Russian literature. The jury of the award, consisting of recognized experts, selects the best works, supporting living classical writers and revealing new talented authors to readers. This opportunity to make its contribution to the support and development of literature in Russian and the world makes the Yasnaya Polyana award one of Samsung‘s major cultural projects in Russia,“ says Sergey Pevnev, Director of Corporate Projects at the Samsung Electronics CIS headquarters.

The Yasnaya Polyana Book Award has been given annually, since 2003, to writers whose works follow traditions of classical literature. In 2017, the Award marked its 15th anniversary, and its structure was changed. This year the jury selects the best works of fiction in two categories: Modern Russian Fiction and Foreign Fiction, and also chooses the winner in a new category, The Event.  Among the winners of the award, in various years and categories, have been Narine Abgaryan, Alexander Grigorenko, Guzel Yakhina, Evgeny Vodolazkin, Aleksei Ivanov, Zakhar Prilepin, Vasily Golovanov, Mikhail Tarkovsky, and Roman Senchin.
