Tickets to the Tolstoy Weekend Festival Are Now on Sale

On May 18, the sale of tickets to the Tolstoy Weekend International Theater Festival began; the festival will take place on June 9-12, 2018 at the Yasnaya Polyana Estate-Museum. In the year of Leo Tolstoy‘s 190th birthday, leading Russian and foreign theaters will show their productions based on works by Tolstoy and other writers.

The festival will be opened by Kolyada Theater from Ekaterinburg, the most well-known private theater in Russia; tickets to its plays, if they are put on in Moscow, sell out within two days. Nikolai Kolyada staged the story The Forged Coupon, which is rarely found in theaters’ repertoire; the play is about one’s personal choice, responsibility for one’s actions, and the mechanism of evil.

The Oleg Tabakov Theater (Moscow) will present the story The Devil, also quite rarely staged. The main role is played by Maxim Matveev. This work and The Kreutzer Sonata that will be shown by two theaters at the festival – the Valmiera Drama Theater from Latvia and the Ballet Moscow Theater – demonstrate Leo Tolstoy’s reflections on sex and marriage. Two versions of the Boyhood will be presented by two famous regional theaters in Russia – the Perm and Saratov theaters for young spectators.

All the plays for the Tolstoy Weekend were selected by its program director, the theater critic Pavel Rudnev. According to him, the audience will see plays of various genres and styles, from the classical traitional theater to experimental productions: „It‘s essential that the geography of the festival is broader this year; many more regional plays are participating in it. In addition to communication with the audience, any festival also means communicating with one another. For example, sketches done by the theaters from Elets, Kaluga and Ryazan will be seen by other theaters, and, I’m sure, it will encourage them to do more creative projects based on Tolstoy’s ideas. Such short plays as Petr Khlebnik, The First Distiller, and The Cause of It All are wonderful works of literature, but they haven’t been stage in Russian at all lately. There is much simplicity and naiveté in them. But it’s not only a spectacle, but also an acquaintance with the material which is not often seen on stage.”

A walk/play by Evgeny Malenchev, a young director from Tula, is of special importance. The play based on eight volumes of  Leo Tolstoy’s diaries was written by the young playwright Yulia Pospelova; the composer is Grigory Polukhutenko. Also, specially for the festival, the independent Moscow theater Le Cirque De Charles La Tannes prepared the storytelling play Who Murdered Anna.

The foreign productions include The Strider – a synthesis of drama and puppet theater, and the above mentioned play from Valmiera.

On the last day of the festival, June 12, there will be a meeting with the creators of the film The History of One Appointement at the Yasnaya Polyana Cultural Center. Its premiere will take place at the Kinotavr Festival in early June. At Yasnaya Polyana, the audience will see fragments from the film; they will be presented by the director Avdotya Smirnova, the author of the script Pavel Basinsky, and the actor Evgeny Kharitonov who performed the role of young Tolstoy.

As is traditional, the Tolstoy Weekend will include children‘s plays based on stories by Tolstoy and modern authors. Specially for the festival, the Storytelling Workshop, so well-loved by children, has prepared its own versions of Tolstoy’s stories for children.

The Tolstoy Weekend first took place in 2016. The idea of the festival belongs to the Governor of Tula Region, Aleksei Dyumin. In 2017, the festival became international. It was visited by 5,000 guests, including over 100 representatives of federal and regional media, who called the Tolstoy Weekend the main summer theater event of the year.
