Online Project: Leo Tolstoy’s Elder Children

Leo Tolstoy is famous as a writer, essayist, philosopher, and thinker; his name was, and still is well-known all over the world. But our museum‘s new online project we‘ll focus not on the author himself, but his closest people – his children.

Leo Tolstoy and his wife Sophia had 13 children; eight of them reached adulthood, and five died in infancy or childhood. The project dedicated to Tolstoy‘s children will consist of two parts. At first, we‘ll tell about the writer‘s five elder children in whose upbring and education he actively participated and whose views he influenced considerably; in the second part of the project, we‘ll focus on the lives of the four younger children who were born when Tolstoy was not so much involved in family matters any more.

Now we are introducing the project Leo Tolstoy’s Elder Children (link to a Russian language web site). It tells about Sergey, Tatiana, Ilya, Leo, and Maria Tolstoy. The project is based on dozens of historical documents, letters, and memoirs. All the photographs are from the collection of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum; many of them have never been published before.
