On August 25-29, 2017 the 12th International Seminar of Translators of Works by Leo Tolstoy and Other Russian Classical Authors took place at Yasnaya Polyana. This year, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage program, the seminar was held jointly with UNESCO representatives and was dedicated to the documentary heritage of translators of Leo Tolstoy‘s and other Russian classical writers‘ works. The director of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum, Ekaterina Tolstaya, made a welcome speech to the participants who came from 11 countries, including Russia. Professor Lothar Jordan, Vice-President of the the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage program, and ZHANG Longxi, an asociate member of the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage program, made plenary presentations. All in all, there were 28 presentations in Russian, English, and German. Photographs from the seminar can be found HERE >>>

As always, our Turkish colleagues, representing the Erciyes University, distinguished themselves by the high professionalism of their presentations – Uğur Büke, Sabri Gurses, Sevinç Üçgül, and Erdem Erinç. Their presentations were characterized by their excellent command of Russian, their skillful combination of the theory and practice of translation, and their serious academic preparation. However, all the other participants in the seminar from various countries showed a extremely high level – all the reports were met with very interesting questions and comments.

After the seminar sessions, a post-seminar discussion of its results was held, and the traditional presentation of the Proceeding of the Translators’ Seminar 2016 and other publications on Leo Tolstoy and editions of translations of his works. As part of the seminar, there was a screening of and discussion of two documentary films by Galina Evtushenko: The Railway Halt and Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi: a Double Portrait in the Interior of an Epoch. Then the classical guitarist Sergey Rudnev played for the seminar participants, and the writer Arsen Titov read two of his short stories.
