Yasnaya Polyana Cultural Center

The presentation has been prepared by the SLOVO publishing house jointly with the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Center at the Embassy of India to the Russian Federation. 2017 marks the 70th anniversary of India’s independence. The publication of the book and its presentation at the Yasnaya Polyana Museum will be an important event for cultural and diplomatic relations.

The book will be presented by its author, Pramod Kapoor - an Indian publisher, writer, and Knight of the Legion of Honour of the French Republic, and for the SLOVO publishing house, by its General Director Grigory Eritsyan and Editor-in-chief Natalia Avetisyan. The presentation will begin with welcome speeches by the Ambassador of India to the RF Mr. Pankaj Saran and the director of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum Ekaterina Tolstaya.

The program includes a screening of an 11-minute film about the book, a concert of Indian classical music and dance, and a mini-exhibition of archival photographs from the book.

Gandhi: An Illustrated Biography is an international best-seller that has already been published as an edition of 40,000 copies in seven languages in eight countries: Great Britain, the USA, France, Italy, and others. The Russian version is being issued by SLOVO in mid-September of 2017.

The book includes a chapter that is of special interest to Russian readers – about the relationship between Gandhi and Leo Tolstoy, whom Gandhi considered one of his teachers and whose principle of non-resistance to evil by violence he realised in his philosophy of non-violent resistance. It is a chapter about the Tolstoy Farm founded by Gandhi near Johannesburg, where he lived according to our great “nonresistant’s” ideas, built, baked bread, and even made sandals himself.

Pramod Kapoor had the goal of explaining the phenomenon of Gandhi to the modern generation. He managed to find a lot of new materials related to Gandhi‘s life, for example a letter by Gandhi‘s eldest son Harilal to his father. There can’t be many documents that could match this one in terms of its dramatiс character and intensity of emotions.

“What, after all, makes my book different from those published before? It‘s precisely the fact that each time, while burrowing in the archives, I encounter some story or interesting information which historians considered unimportant.”

The director of the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Center Mr. Jaisundar, the director of the Leo Tolstoy State Museum in Moscow Sergey Arkhangelov, representatives of the Second Asian Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, directors of major bookstores in Moscow, the most well-known Russian Indologists, members of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professors of Indian philology of the Institute of Asian and African Countries at Moscow State University and Russian State Humanities University, historians, art historians, representatives of the Tula Region’s government, and many others are expected among the guests.
