Background information:

Apple orchards are part and parcel of the Yasnaya Polyana estate. The first orchard was founded by Tolstoy‘s grandfather Prince Nikolai Volkonsky. As a child, Tolstoy spend many happy hours in the apple orchard: “When it grew hot… I often went into the garden or the orchard to eat whatever vegetables or fruit were ripe, and this occupation afforded me one of my greatest pleasures.“ After he became the owner of the estate, Tolstoy considerably increased the area occupied by orchards, which gradually reached 40 hectares. The orchards were often mentioned in his literary works, and in his and his family‘s diaries and letters.

The orchards of Yasnaya Polyana are quite unique: here you can still find old Russian varieties of apple trees that were known in Russia more than two centuries ago, and apple trees planted in Leo Tolstoy‘s lifetime, and our visitors have a chance to enjoy the taste of their apples.

On the day of The Apple Story, all the guided tours at the museum will include additional “orchard“ information. Guided tours of the estate, the Tolstoy House and the Kuzminsky House are offered from 9:30 to 16:30. Admission to the estate grounds: from 9:00 to 20:00.
