The 22nd International Writers‘ Meetings

During the 22nd International Writers’ Meetings, according to our tradition, writers, philosophers, journalists and poets will gather here for informal and lively communication. The Meetings will start on Leo Tolstoy’s birthday; at 10:00, the writers will say their Word about Tolstoy in front of the Tolstoy House, sharing their reflections on the relevance of his ideas for modern society. The Slovenian author Drago Jančar, invited to participate in the Meetings as part of the 100 Slavic Novels program, will also speak to the audience. The program of the Meetings can be found HERE >>>

100 Slavic Novels is an international publishing project of the Forum of Slavic Cultures that has been cooperating with Yasnaya Polyana for several years. A number of authors whose works were published in this series will take part in discussions with Russian and foreign writers. They are Laslo Blaškovič (Serbia), Jani Virk (Slovenia), Nada Gašić (Croatia), and Drago Jančar (Slovenia), whose novel I Saw Her That Night was long-listed for the Yasnaya Polyana Foreign Fiction Award. An open dialogue between Drago Jančar and Vladislav Otroshenko will take place on the first day of the Meetings.

One more discussion – Summoning the Revolution – should be specially noted; it will be focused on the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. All the sessions of the Writers‘ Meetings are open to the public. The first session will take place in the Volkonsky House; all the other sessions will be held at the Yasnaya Polyana Cultural Center. For the Summoning the Revolution discussion the writers will be invited to the Tula State Pedagogical University, building 4 (Lenin Avenue, 125). You are also welcome to attend a meeting with Igor Volgin at the Yasnaya Polyana Cultural Center on September 9.

On September 10, also at the Cultural Center, the film dorector Darya Violina will present her film Longer Than Life dedicated to the lives of children of persecuted parents. It is based on stories told by people who managed to survive, not to give way to fear, and to preserve the memory of the past. Among others, the film tells about Chingiz Aitmatov, Tamara Petkevich, and Azary Plisetsky. In 2009, the film received three main awards at the Stalker International Human Rights Film Festival: the main jury’s prize, the Council of Europe prize, and the human rights organizations’ jury prize. The screening is organized jointly with the Tula branch of the Memorial Historical, Educational and Human Rights Society. Admission is free, but registration in advance is required. Register at https://yaspol.timepad.ru/event/556957.

The International Writers‘ Meetings at Yasnaya Polyana have been held annually since 1996; modern Russian and foreign writers gather at the estate to share their opinions on Tolstoy‘s creative heritage.
