"Yasnaya Polyana" Cultural Center

On September 9, 2014, Leo Tolstoy’s 186th birthday, a concert of the State Tchaikovsky Quartet will take place at the “Yasnaya Polyana” Cultural Center (village of Yasnaya Polyana, 142A). The string quartet will perform pieces by Bach, Händel, Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, one of the founders of the string quartet genre, Joseph Haydn, and the 5th quartet of the Italian cellist Luigi Boccherini.

Leo Tolstoy was very fond of music and attached to this art the greatest importance after literature. The writer himself played the piano, and to improve his skills would practice for several hours a day learning works by Schumann, Chopin, and Mozart. Moreover, Tolstoy taught his pupils at the Yasnaya Polyana school the rudiments of music and singing. Tolstoy’s own thoughts on music can be found in many of his literary works, from his autobiographical stories to “War and Peace.”

The State P.I. Tchaikovsky Quartet will once again remind residents of Tula about Leo Tolstoy’s love of music by performing pieces of great music at his home place.

The concert starts at 7:00 p.m.

Admission by tickets. Ticket price: 300 rubles. Information at +7 915 690 0155. Tickets can be purchased at the “Yasnaya Polyana” Gallery (+7 4872 473580, Tula, Oktyabrskaya St., 12) and the ticket office of the Yasnaya Polyana Estate-Museum (+7 48751 76001).

For your information:

The Tchaikovsky Quartet was established in 1975, when a music group of Moscow Conservatory students won at the prestigious International B. Bartok Festival in Budapest. Both the audience and the jury noted the ensemble’s original style and manner of performance that broke set patterns. The performers have always treated the musical text very carefully, but have not strictly followed the traditional interpretations. During its existence, the cast of the ensemble has changed, but its unique approach to the compositions they perform has remained the same.

In 1990, the ensemble won a prize at the Valentino Buссhi International Contest of Chamber Ensembles (Italy). After that, the musicians began performing a lot, giving concerts in Europe, Asia and America. Large editions of CDs with music by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Schubert recorded by the Tchaikovsky Quartet have been sold.

In 2001, the Tchaikovsky Quartet established an international chamber music festival, “Spring in Russia.” During the festival, leading chamber music ensembles gather in Moscow to play together with Russian musicians.

Current members of the ensemble are:

Lev Maslovsky (first violin)

Zakhar Malakhov (second violin)

Sergey Baturin (alto), Honoured Artist of Russia

Kirill Rodin (cello), winner at the Tchaikovsky International Contest and the International Contest of Musicians in Belgrade.

During the almost 40 years of its career, the Tchaikovsky Quartet has remained true to the only, to their mind, worthy goal – comprehension of the human soul. With each performance, the musicians try to reveal its simple but timeless essence.
