Summer Concerts in the Tolstoy House

afishaJune 14, July 12, August 9, 2014
Yasnaya Polyana Estate

In the summer, the Yasnaya Polyana Museum will offer its guests a new program, “Music in the Tolstoy Family.” For the first time in many years the old Becker grand piano will resound, bringing back to life a special atmosphere of musical evenings in Leo Tolstoy’s family.

Admission is by tickets. Ticket price: 1,500 rubles (for the concert and the guided tour “Music in Leo Tolstoy’s Life”). Tickets can be purchased at the “Yasnaya Polyana” Gallery (+7 4872 473580), the Yasnaya Polyana museum ticket office (+7 48751 76001), and from the website ypconcert.eventmag.ru (commission included in the price).

Tolstoy was not just fond of music; it seems he lived in the world of music. His eldest son Sergey wrote: “I have never met anyone in my life who would feel music as strongly as my father did. Hearing music, he couldn’t help but listen to it; and listening to the music he liked he became excited, something caught in his throat, he sobbed and shed tears. … Sometimes music moved him against his will, even tormented him, and he would say: “What does this music want from me?”

Music could be heard at Yasnaya Polyana all the time. Everybody in the family played some musical instrument: Leo Tolstoy himself, his wife Sophia and her sister Tatiana Kuzminskaya, the sons and daughters, and guests. Many professional musicians visited Yasnaya Polyana to play for Tolstoy. The outstanding pianist A.B. Goldenveizer (a friend of Tolstoy’s who knew the writer’s taste very well) wrote in his memoirs that “the direct impact of music on him was stronger than that of other arts.”

In 2008, the Yasnaya Polyana Museum released a CD whose title came from words in Sergey Tolstoy’s memoirs: “… in the evenings we did music.” It included music pieces that truly revealed the musical tastes of several generations of the Tolstoy family. Our new program “Music in the Tolstoy Family” is the next step, which lets visitors hear in live performance rare music pieces as if they were guests at a Tolstoy family musical evening.

The program of musical evenings at Yasnaya Polyana is based on three concerts, performed by the singer Olga Matveeva, the pianists Vasilisa Belova and Natalia Ardasheva, and the violinist Alexander Trostyansky. Each of them will try to reveal for the audience a certain facet of the interaction of Leo Tolstoy and his family with the world of music. The concerts will be preceded by the thematic guided tour “Music in Leo Tolstoy’s Life,” specially prepared for this project.

Please note: music is a universal language, but all the speaking will be done in Russian only.
