“Karenina: Live Edition” Project Has Been Launched
August 7, 2014

A unique international online project, “Karenina. Live Edition,” was launched on August 6. This joint idea of the Yasnaya Polyana Estate-Museum and Google aims to unite lovers of Russian classical literature all over the world. Read more about the project and terms of participation here >>>

From Yasnaya Polyana to the Children of Russia
As part of the program "From Yasnaya Polyana to the Children of Russia" school students from 10 regions of the country will visit our museum in August: from Ryazan, Kursk, Belgorod, Samara, Volgograd, Kemerovo, Rostov regions, from Udmurtia, Kalmykia, and also from Sevastopol and the Crimea.

Exhibition "A Sacred Ideal"

“The Joy of Childhood” Exhibition


July 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Volkonsky House there will be the opening of an exhibition, “The Joy of Childhood,” dedicated to the children of Leo Tolstoy and his wife Sofia Tolstaya. Details about the exhibition are here >>>

Practical Training for Tula State University Students at the Environment Department


From June 30 to July 26, 2014 2nd year biology students of Tula State University had their field practical training at the Yasnaya Polyana Estate premises. The students studied the flora and fauna of the park area in the central part of the estate, of the coniferous and deciduous forests, and of the riverside and swamp areas. “The Joy of Childhood” Exhibition

The opening of the exhibition will take place July 26 at 14:00. Until September 10, it is open to visitors who have bought a ticket, without advance booking. Beginning September 10, it is open upon booking in advance by telephone +7 (48751) 76-1-10 (except Saturdays and Sundays).

The project “The Joy of Childhood” acquaints visitors with the first, most surprising and happiest period in the life of the Tolstoy children. The exhibition will include items from the collections of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum and the State Tolstoy Museum in Moscow.

Opening of the exhibition is taking place on August 2 at 18:00 

The exhibition “A Sacred Ideal” is devoted to Maria Tolstaya (neé Volkonskaya), Leo Tolstoy’s mother. “… In my imagining of her there is only her spiritual figure,” Tolstoy recalled, “everything I know about her is beautiful.”  

Visitors to the exhibition will learn about the history of the Volkonsky family, with the everyday life of Moscow and St. Petersburg in the early 19th century, and will come to know how, due to the efforts of the “intelligent, proud and talented” Prince Nikolai Volkonsky and his daughter Princess Maria, the village of Yasnaya Polyana was gradually becoming a corner of Eden where the main virtues were the ideas of Enlightenment and humanism, love for God and love for one’s neighbor.

Traditionally, every two years our museum holds the “Motley Glade” folk art festival, which brings together patchwork artists from Russia and nearby countries. The festival includes competitions, workshops, and seminars, which develop the originality and creativity of the artists, and are open to all who wish to participate. “Motley Glade” ends with a fair and sales of works at the Cultural Center.
