Faces of the Tolstoy House

cover

Special online project of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum for the national event Art Night

The interiors of the Leo Tolstoy House, where each smallest detail has been preserved, give us the chance to feel the atmosphere of his family‘s life at Yasnaya Polyana. But with one exception: a guide rather than the lady of the house welcomes you in the entrance hall. However, there is still a chance to “meet“ those who used to live in the house – thanks to the family portraits.

When you see these portraits, you will understand that the Tolstoys knew their family history very well and carefully preserved family stories. Through this project, we will not only tell about Leo Tolstoys ancestors, but also show which ancient noble families he was closely related to.

Following the time scale from left to right, you will gradually reach the images of the writer himself and his family. It is Tolstoy‘s “inner circle,“ including not only his wife and children, but also those who painted their portraits. Stories related to the creation of these canvases will be told in the words of the artists and their models.

Our project will acquaint its users with the collection of portraits in the Tolstoy House, and will tell about real people and their lives; and, who knows, during another visit to Yasnaya Polyana one will probably look more attentively into those familiar faces.

The Yasnaya Polyana Museum invites disabled children to workshops of the program Clay Fairy Tale at Yasnaya Polyana. The workshops will be held during this academic year at our museum‘s branch in Tula (Oktyabrskaya St., 14).

During the workshops, the children will get acquainted with clay modeling techniques and the history of pottery. Under the guidance of Yasnaya Polyana craftsmen, they will be able to make simple items on their own: souvenir pendants, bells, and plaquettes based on Leo Tolstoy’s stories for children.

Seven Myths about Tolstoy
TolstoySpecial project of the Yasnaya Polyana Museum commemorating the writer's 189th birthday

Even in Tolstoy‘s lifetime, facts and guesswork about him were closely intertwined in the consciousness of his contemporaries, and it was hard to see where the real Tolstoy ended and the made-up Tolstoy began. Now, it seems, there is even more misapprehension of the classical author.
